Candy Science

See what happens--and figure out why--when...

You put different colored gobstoppers in water...
You put a black jellybean on filter paper...
Float (or sink) different kinds of candy bars...

Mix Mentos and pop rocks in different kinds of pop...

Yum....

Pi (e) Day!

It's a unique way to write poetry or a story--you start with Pi (the number!).
Look at the number, Pi, and decide how many words you want in your story or poem. Compose your story or poem using words that have the same number of letters as each digit in pi. For example, since pi begins with the digits 3, 1 and 4, the first word in the story would contain three letters; the second word would contain one letter; the third word would contain four letters, and so on. Here are some of the poems composed by teens during our recent Pi program:
Eye I eyes I
Ultra messenger
am zombie.

Cat a bolt.
I color a coats container...

It's a cold. I cough.
Coughing is scared.
Cough.

Want to try it? Just start with Pi--3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510582

If you need more numbers, check out the first million at a Pi Day site: One Million Digits of Pi

You can toss Pi, too, with a method known as Buffon's Needles.
Learn more at Math Is Fun. We used toothpicks--not matchsticks, & it (mostly) worked!

Make Pi bracelets & necklaces, too! Assign a colored bead to each number, 0-9, and start beading!

Want to write a review?

Just see Linda at the Cedar Lake Library. Then start reading and writing! You can earn volunteer time for helping!
